Division One Update
Kingfisher A vs Lightning A
This week’s Division One action kicked off with Kingfisher A hosting Lightning A.
Looking back at previous seasons, this fixture had all the makings of a close encounter — but this year’s scoreline told a different story.
Lightning were missing one of their regular ladies, with Nicky Percy stepping in to fill the spot. Despite the reshuffle, it was actually the Lightning ladies who shone brightest, securing all three of their side’s only wins on the night.
Unfortunately, Lightning’s men couldn’t add to the tally, as Kingfisher’s men proved too strong across their games.
The standout performances came from Alex Mackie and Adrian Greenwood, who took their first mixed right down to the wire — pushing the match to setting — but ultimately held their nerve to secure the victory.
It will be interesting to see how Lightning respond in the return fixture, especially with home advantage potentially swinging things their way.
For now, Kingfisher remain unbeaten, and the question on everyone’s mind — could this be their year to lift the Division One trophy?
Poulton A vs Stanley
Elsewhere in Division One, Poulton A hosted Stanley and came away with a commanding 23–1 victory.
Poulton also welcomed Danny Dicken into the fold — great to see him returning to court after a number of years away!
For Stanley, the focus will be on regrouping and looking to pick up more games and valuable points in the coming weeks to lift themselves away from the relegation zone.
Mixed Division 2
In the only Mixed Division 2 fixture this week, Lids hosted Lightning B.
The following was received along with the match slip:
“This was a competitive and friendly match, and the result doesn’t really reflect the games in the final score of 2–22.
The Lids ladies are still finding their feet in league badminton but are enjoying and learning all the time.
The more experienced Lightning players had the edge, but there were some close games overall.”
A wonderful summary that captures the spirit of the night — competitive, positive, and full of good sportsmanship. Well done to both teams for an enjoyable fixture!
Levels Division 1
In Levels Division 1, Stanley hosted Kirkham A in what turned out to be a really good match, filled with close games and competitive rallies.
Despite the effort from the home side, Kirkham A came away with a solid 13–3 victory.
A special mention to Jason Loffman, who won all three games for Stanley, showing great determination and consistency throughout the night.
For Kirkham A, the Players of the Match were Danny Robinson and Scott Leadbetter, both putting in strong performances to help secure the win.
Meanwhile, Lightning A hosted Lids A, and it was a convincing result for the home team, taking a 16–0 victory.
A tough night for Lids A, but credit to them for battling through every game.
Levels Division 2
In Levels Division 2, Kirkham C hosted Lids B and made full use of their home advantage, taking a dominant 16–0 win.
A fantastic performance and a clean sweep — well played to Kirkham C!
Also in Division 2, Bloomfield B faced Fleetwood B, securing another 16–0 victory.
However, the scoreline doesn’t quite tell the full story — several matches were closely contested, with Fleetwood B putting up a strong fight throughout. Hopefully, they can turn things around in the next match!
And finally, Lightning B hosted Kirkham Juniors, and along with the scorecard came a mini match report.
Lightning fielded debutants Brendan Cowell (14) and Chris Young, assuming that the Kirkham Juniors side might be a little weaker — but they were in for a surprise!
Jamie Sedgewick admitted afterwards that it was the strongest team the Juniors have fielded so far this season. The tie saw lots of close matches, plenty of mistakes, and more than a few missed (literally!) opportunities on both sides.
A clear message came out of the fixture — teams should not underestimate Kirkham Juniors.
Well played to the young side on a great performance!
Thanks again to all clubs for their prompt match reports along with the brief match summary too.
I wish everyone the best for this coming week.
Be sure to enjoy and rest this weekend!
